Core Web Vitals and website speed: what should businesses prioritise?
September 16, 2026 · Alin Digital

Core Web Vitals are user-centred performance metrics. The current core set is LCP for loading experience, INP for interaction responsiveness and CLS for visual stability. web.dev lists recommended “good” thresholds of LCP ≤ 2.5 seconds, INP ≤ 200 ms and CLS ≤ 0.1, assessed at the 75th percentile of page visits.
Use these values as diagnostic and quality targets—not as a ranking promise. A fast page with weak content does not automatically become a strong search result.
LCP: how quickly the main content becomes visible
LCP is often influenced by server response time, render-blocking resources, large hero images and how critical resources are prioritised. Start by measuring which element is actually the LCP element on representative pages.
INP: how quickly the page responds to interaction
Heavy JavaScript, long main-thread tasks and complex event handlers can slow interactions. Remove unnecessary JavaScript, defer non-critical work and test real interactions such as menus, forms and filters.
CLS: prevent unexpected layout movement
Images without dimensions, late banners or fonts that change layout can create unexpected shifts. Reserve space for media and dynamic elements and be careful with components inserted above existing content.
Field data and lab data are different
Lab tools are useful for debugging, but real users may have different devices, networks and interaction patterns. Include field data when available. INP specifically requires real user interactions; lab tools often use proxy metrics for diagnosis.
A practical WordPress priority order
- Measure representative templates: home, service and article.
- Identify the main cause per template before installing more optimisation plugins.
- Optimise images, fonts and critical CSS/JS.
- Keep caching simple and avoid overlapping cache plugins.
- Measure again and document the change.
