Google Business Profile: a practical checklist for local businesses
September 16, 2026 · Alin Digital

Google Business Profile is often one of the most important digital assets for a local business. Treat it as an ongoing operating channel rather than a one-time setup. Google recommends complete and accurate information and explains that local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence.
Core setup
- Verify ownership and access.
- Use the business’s real-world name without added keywords.
- Choose the most accurate primary category and relevant secondary categories.
- Verify address/service area, phone, website and opening hours.
- Add services and details that are genuinely offered.
Images and ongoing maintenance
Use current, authentic images that help customers understand the business. Review the profile after seasonal changes, holidays and contact-detail changes. Incorrect opening hours are both a user-experience and trust problem.
Reviews
Build a simple, lawful and consistent process for asking real customers for reviews. Respond professionally to both positive and negative feedback. Do not buy reviews or create fake profiles. The goal is trustworthy feedback, not an artificial number.
Connect the profile to the website
Link to a relevant, fast and mobile-friendly page. The website should keep business name, contact details and service information consistent. Where appropriate, Google Business Profile, local SEO and local landing pages should be planned as one system.
Measurement
Review actions generated by the profile, but also assess actual enquiry and sales quality. Local rankings vary with factors including distance, so one manual search from one location is not a complete measure of visibility.
